Salt metathesis,i.e.the reaction of sodium ?-diketiminate with (AlCp*)4and GaCp*, respectively, is a valuable pathway to access the respective aluminium(i) and gallium(i) ?-diketiminatesIandII. The protocol gives better yields compared to the established procedures and avoids the use of strong reducing agents such as metallic potassium. Furthermore, the aluminium(i) ?-diketiminateIwas found to react with itself and yields upon C-N bond cleavage and hydrogen-atom transfer the asymmetric dinuclear aluminium(iii) complexVthat is readily separated fromIby crystallisation. The reaction mechanism has been probed by means of DFT and DLPNO-CCSD(T) calculations and the computational findings are in good agreement with the experimental observations.

The Al(I) compound NacNacAl (1, NacNac = [ArNC(Me)CHC(Me)NAr]- and Ar = 2,6-Pri2C6H3) reacts with H-X (X = H, Si, B, Al, C, N, P, O) σ bonds of H2, silanes, borane (HBpin, pin = pinacolate), allane (NacNacAlH2), phosphine (HPPh2), amines, alcohol (PriOH), and Cp H (Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadiene) to give a series of hydride derivatives of the four-coordinate aluminum NacNacAlH(X), which are characterized herein by spectroscopic methods (NMR and IR) and X-ray diffraction. This method allows for the syntheses of the first boryl hydride of aluminum and novel silyl hydride and phosphido hydride derivatives. In the case of the addition of NacNacAlH 2, the reaction is reversible, proving the possibility of reductive elimination from the species NacNacAlH(X).

The solid-state reaction of LAl and imidazol-2-ylidene at elevated temperature (120 °C) yielded the aluminum monohydride N-heterocyclic carbene adduct [{HC[C(CH2)NAr] (CMeNAr)}AlH-{CN(R)C2Me 2N(R)}] [R = iPr (1), Me (2)].

A monovalent aluminum monomer [{HC(CMeNAr)2}Al] was obtained by reduction of the corresponding aluminum(III) diiodide. The molecular structure shows a unique two-coordinate aluminum center and a planar heterocyclic Al-N-C-C-C-N six-membered ring system (see picture).A nonbonded lone pair of electrons on the Al atom indicates the Lewis base character of the aluminum center. Ar = 2,6-iPr2C6H3.
