Reaction of C7H8PtCl2 with CF3SAg in dichloromethane solution results in the replacement of both chlorine atoms with CF3S groups to give white crystalline C7H8Pt(SCF3)2. However, the analogous reaction of C7H8PdCl2 with CF3SAg results in addition of CF3S groups to the norbornadiene ligand to give the two yellow crystalline products [(C7H8SCF3)Pd]2Cl2 and [(C7H8SCF3)Pd]2(Cl)(SCF3) shown by their proton nmr spectra to be novel nortricyclyl derivatives. Reaction of the tetraphenylcyclobutadiene complex [(C6H5)4C4PdBr2] 2 with CF3SAg in dichloromethane solution gives golden red (C6H5)4C4Pd-(SCF3) 2 formulated as a monomeric 16-electron tetraphenylcyclobutadiene complex. However, reaction of (C6H5)4C4Co-(CO)2Cl with CF3SAg gives the dark red binuclear complex [(C6H5)4C4Co(CO)SCF 3]2. The structures of these new compounds are discussed.
