Different routes to tripod ligands CH3C(CH2C5H5)(CH2PR′2)(CH2PR″2), 5, containing a cyclopentadienyl unit and two additional donor groups are described. The syntheses involve CH2OCH2C (CH3)CH2C5H5), 2, or CH3C(CH2Cl)(CH2Br)(CH2C5H5), 12, respectively as intermediates. The compounds 2 and 12 respectively are obtained from CH2OCH2C(CH3)(CH2OSO2CH3), 1, or CH3C(CH2Cl)(CH2Br)(CH2OSO2CF3), 11, by reaction with CpMgCl. The capability of the ligand 5 to coordinate to a transition metal via all its three donor groups is documented by the analytical, spectroscopical and X-ray structural characterisation of CH3C(CH2-η5-C5H4)(CH2PPh2)2Mn(CO), 13.
