General Description

1,1,2,2,4-pentachlorobutane is a chemical compound with the molecular formula C4H6Cl5. It is a chlorinated derivative of butane, with five chlorine atoms attached to the carbon chain. 1,1,2,2,4-pentachlorobutane is a colorless liquid with a strong, pungent odor. It is used as a solvent and as a chemical intermediate in the production of other compounds. 1,1,2,2,4-pentachlorobutane is also a potential environmental pollutant and has been identified as a contaminant in some industrial waste streams. Its toxicological properties are not well studied, but exposure to high levels of 1,1,2,2,4-pentachlorobutane can be hazardous to human health and the environment.

Tetrahydrofuran was converted to 2,2,4-trichlorobutanal (1) in 60-73percent overall yield by isomerisation of intermediate 2,3,3-trichlorotetrahydrofuran (2) in the presence of 4-6percent (w:w) of aluminium trichloride at 100-140 deg C for 40-60 min.Zinc chloride and titanium tetrachloride were less effective as catalysts, while hydrogen chloride and paratoluenesulfonic acid were ineffective.
