Trichloroacetoaldehyde-p-toluenesulfonylhydrazone (3) derived from chloral hydrate reacted in situ with polysulfide salt in the range of pH 10-11 to afford the corresponding 5-mercapto-1,2,3-thiadiazole salt(2) in high yield (69.5 %).
