This work describes the synthesis of magnetic graphene oxide (MGO), where iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles were uniformly deposited over the sheets of the graphene oxide (GO). Further, the introduction of aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS) on the surface of MGO was successfully done and results in the formation of amine-functionalized magnetic graphene oxide (MGO–NH2). The synthesized heterogeneous magnetic nanocomposite was characterized by numerous physicochemical and morphological techniques such as powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, thermogravimetric analysis, transmission electron microscopy, vibrating sample magnetometer, scanning electron microscopy, CHN analyzer, and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. The synthesized nanocomposite was proved to be an effectual catalyst in the nucleophilic ring opening reactions of styrene oxide with derivatives of amines under green solvent. The present catalyst displayed good catalytic activity, short reaction time, higher regioselectivity, excellent yields and could be reutilized up to seven catalytic rounds with no substantial loss in its activity. The excellent properties of the catalyst are due to the dual character of acidic groups (existence of carboxyl groups on the sheet edges) and basic groups (amine groups anchored on the surface of GO). On completion of the reaction, the prepared nanocomposite could be effortlessly recovered from the reaction mixture by utilizing an external magnet, owing to the ferromagnetic property of Fe3O4. In this paper, a Cu(II) immobilized periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMOs) was synthesized and used as a reusable solid Lewis acid catalyst for the aminolysis of epoxides under solvent-free conditions. An amide-based ligand, L-propylsilyl (1) having a specific binding pocket was prepared and fabricated on mesoporous MCM-41 to produce mesoporous organosilica L-propylsilyl@MCM-41 (2). Further, it has been utilized for anchoring Cu(II) ions under controlled reaction conditions to yield solid Lewis acid catalyst Cu(II)-L-propylsilyl@MCM-41 (3). The synthesized catalyst 3 exhibits significantly higher catalytic activity for aminolysis compared to hitherto known solid Lewis acid catalysts. An extensive range of β-amino alcohols with high regio and stereoselectivity were prepared by using catalyst 3. The catalyst was recovered easily and reused eight times without any loss in its catalytic activity. Furthermore, the synthesis of clinically significant propranolol (β-blocker) from α- naphthyl glycidyl ether was attained successfully using catalyst 3 in a very decent yield.

Cellulose sulfate was synthesized by esterification of α-cellulose with concentrated sulfuric acid at ?10°C in ethanol. Cellulose is mainly sulfated on 3-, 6- and 3, 6-positions of the cellulose. It acts as a heterogeneous catalyst for the ring-opening of epoxides with alcohols or anilines and the Friedel-Crafts reaction between N-benzylindole and crotonaldehyde at room temperature. Methanolysis of cyclic epoxides, styrene oxide, terminal aliphatic epoxides, and glycidyl ethers were carried out using the catalyst (0.4–6.8 mg/mmol of epoxide) and afforded the corresponding products in 53–97% isolated yields after 10 min–24 h. Cellulose sulfate was successfully recycled and reused up to 3 catalytic cycles for the ring-opening of styrene oxide with methanol.

A new thiophene-2-carboxamide-functionalized Zr-UiO-66 MOF (1) was synthesized by employing a traditional solvothermal procedure. Compound 1 displayed high thermal (up to 340 °C under an Ar atmosphere) and chemical stability (in water, 1 M HCl, and acetic acid). A nitrogen physisorption measurement with the activated form of 1 (denoted 1) exhibited a BET surface area (781 m2/g) despite attachment of a bulky side chain with the linker molecule. Compound 1 was able to heterogeneously catalyze the ring-opening reaction of epoxides with amines. Catalyst 1 exhibited significant yields as well as wide substrate scope in the ring opening of epoxides by means of amines. It also displayed better catalytic performance in comparison to known MOF catalysts such as Cu3(BTC)2, Fe(BTC) (BTC: 1, 3, 5-benzenetricarboxylate), and Zr-UiO-66. Control experiments were performed with free linker, Zr(IV) salt and without catalyst 1, confirming the exclusive role of 1 in the catalytic reaction. The reusability characteristics of catalyst 1 was established for up to five consecutive catalytic cycles. The synthesis and characterization of the linker molecule, material 1, and 1 and mechanism of the catalysis reaction were studied elaborately.

A series of organoantimony(iii) halide complexes with a tetrahydrodibenzo[c,f][1,5]azastibocine framework were synthesized and employed as water tolerant Lewis acid catalysts. The results of a systematic structure-activity relationship study demonstrated that the strength of N→Sb donor-acceptor interaction could be synergistically modulated by tuning the properties of the nitrogen substituents and halogen atoms adjacent to the central antimony atom, and consequently resulted in distinct catalytic performances towards organic reactions such as Mannich, cross-condensation, cyclization-aromatization and epoxide aminolysis reaction. The fluorinated organoantimony(iii) derivatives were found to be more active than those of the chlorinated, brominated and iodinated analogues, owing to the use of an Sb-F moiety as a hydrogen bond acceptor. By comparison, the compound 6-cyclohexyl-12-fluoro-5,6,7,12-tetrahydrodibenzo[c,f][1,5] azastibocine (1d) is found to exhibit the highest catalytic activity, together with facile reusability in scale enlarged synthesis.

An air-stable mononuclear complex of bis(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) zirconium pentafluorbezenesulfonate was successfully synthesized by treating C6F5SO3Ag with [(CH3)5Cp]2ZrCl2, which showed the cationic uninuclear structure of [{(CH3)5Cp}2Zr(CH3CN)2(H2O)][OSO2C6F5]2·CH3CN (1) confirmed by the X-ray analysis. Complex 1 was also characterized by other techniques and found to have the good nature of air-stability, water tolerance, thermally-stability and strong Lewis-acidity. Moreover, the complex showed high catalytic activity and recyclability in catalytic epoxide ring-opening reactions by amines or alcohols. This catalytic system affords a simple and efficient approach for synthesis of β-amino alcohols or β-alkoxy alcohols.
