Studies on the synthesis of 6-(substituted pyridyl)-2H-[1,4] benzoxazin-3(4H)-one derivatives

6-Chloroacetyl-2H-[1,4]benzoxazin-3(4H)-one 1 is heated with pyridine to obtain 2H-[1,4]benzoxazin-3,4-dihydro-3-oxo-6-acetyl pyridinium chloride 2. 2 on reaction with a variety of chalcones 3 in the presence of ammonium acetate in acetic acid gives 6-(substituted pyridyl)-2H-[1,4]benzoxazin-3(4H)-one 4. Alkylation of 4a (R=R′=Ph) with various alkylating agents yields N-alkyl 6-[2-(4,6-diphenylpyridyl)]-2H-[1,4]benzoxazin-3-one 5, whose structures are supported by spectral and analytical data.
