The reaction of diethyl N-phenyl-1-aminobenzylphosphonate with excess CH3COCl produces a new amidophosphonic acid by hydrolysing the ester in situ; single crystal X-ray structural analysis of the diprotic acid , a = 9.587(2), b = 9.714(2), c = 9.137(2) Angstroem, α = 117.24(3), β = 88.02(2), γ = 102.33(3)deg; R = 0.0651, Rw = 0.0695> reveals hydrogen bonded chains of molecules in the solid state while 1H and 31P NMR spectroscopy indicates two discrete solution species in methanol-d3.
