Polyaromatic amines. Part 2. Synthesis of 4,4′,4″-tris(N-aryl-N-phenylamino)triphenylamine, N,N-bis[4-(N-aryl-N-phenylamino)-phenyl]tolylamine and N,N,N′,N′-tetraaryl-o-phenylenediamine derivatives

The title compounds were synthesised and characterised as part of a study into new aromatic amines for charge transporting materials. Proton and carbon spectral data for compounds 1-6 were obtained in C6D6 as a consequence of their facile oxidation in CDCl3. Each compound was characterised by cyclic voltammetry. An estimate of the intramolecular charge mobility was deduced from the difference between the first and second oxidation potentials.

A series of purely organic small molecules 1-4 based on bis(arylene ethynylene)s with various electron-rich aromatic bridges, such as benzene, cyclopentadithiophene (CDT), and diphenyl(p-tolyl)amine, were synthesized by a Sonogashira coupling reaction. Their optical, electronic, and electrochemical properties were fully characterized. The photovoltaic properties of these molecules as donor materials and [6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester as an acceptor material in solution-processed bulk heterojunction devices were studied. Among them, CDT-bridged molecule 2 exhibited the best photovoltaic performance and achieved a power conversion efficiency of 3.28%. In addition, the photovoltaic efficiencies of these molecules are higher than their corresponding platinum-containing counterparts, probably owing to their stronger light absorption and improved open-circuit voltage.

A series of triphenylamine (TPA) derivatives with various substituent groups were prepared and showed different absorption and fluorescence characteristics due to the substituent effect. On account of the existence of pyridine units, these TPA derivatives exhibited acid-induced tunable multicolor fluorescence emission including white light emission. In addition, acid-induced fluorescence regulation of these compounds has been also realized in the solid state, which enable them to be successfully constructed the stimuli-responsive fluorescent films and fluorescent inks for inkjet printing.

Page/Page column 14-15, (2009/09/28)
The invention discloses a novel carbazole derivative which has at least two carbazole structures in the molecule, can form a stable amorphous film by itself at normal temperature or higher, has a high glass transition temperature, and can be suitably used as an organo-electronic functional material. The following compound having the formula is mentioned as a representative example.
