The reaction of 2H-benzimidazole-2-spirocyclohexane (1) with arylidenemalononitriles (2a,b) and ethyl-α-cyanocinnamates (2c,d) in ethanol gives 5-dicyanomethylene-3,5-dihydro-2H-benzimidazole-2-spirocyclohexane (3a) and 5-cyanocarbethoxymethylene-3,5-dihydro-2H-benzimidazole-2-spirocyclohexane (3b) respectively in good yields.The reaction does not proceed when carried out in benzene or in the dark.The reaction of 1 with diethyl benzylidenemalonate (2e) fails even on prolonged reflux in ethanol.
