Fast and reversible intramolecular cleavage of an Au-C bond in the spiked-triangular metal complexes [Fe3Au(μ4,η2-C≡CtBu) (CO)9 (PR3)] (R = Ph, iPr)

The fast and irreversible intramolecular cleavage of an Au-C bond in the spiked-triangular metal complexes was analyzed. The gold fragment was found to display an unexpected bonding mode and a fast and reversible process of oxidative addition/reductive elimination of the Au-C bond was observed in the solution. The results show that the Au-C bond cleavage equilibrium operating in the observed clusters has a low kinetic barrier and results from a subtle balance of factors.
