The kinetics of the reaction of aroylpyruvic acids with aniline in toluene were studied.The possibility of bifunctional catalysis by the carboxyl groups in the aroylpyruvic acids is discussed.Reaction paths characteristic of catalysis by acids and concerted catalysis by the acid and a second moelcule of the nucleophile were found in the presence of catalytic amounts of carboxylic acids.Structures are proposed for the transition states.
