The synthesis of the block copolymers combining enzymatic ring opening polymerization (ROP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was discussed. To synthesize block copolymers, the enzymatically polymerized PCL was precipitated and subsequently used to macroinitiate styrene. The PCL macroinitiator was then used for the ATRP of the styrene. A PCL end caped with the initiator was obtained in high selectivity by enzymatic ROP using a bifunctional initiator bearing initiator groups for both techniques. Sequential macroinitiation of styrene by ATRP results in block polymers in high yield without requiring an intermediate transformation step.
