The authors investigate the synthesis of several 1,4-acridinediones substituted in position 2 or 2 and 3 simultaneously. These acridinediones are related to streptonigrin, the antitumor activity of which results from the redox properties of the 7-amino-6-methoxy-5,8-quinolinedione nucleus. Pacridinediones are particularly cytotoxic in vitro against the leukemia L1210 cell, but none of them shows antitumor activity in the L1210 tumor affected mouse.
