Sodium borohydride was used for reduction of methyl 4,6-O-benzylidene-2-O-(2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-β-D-glucopyranosyl- (3) and -D-galactopyranosyl)-α-D-ribo-hexapyranosyl-3-ulosides (4).As a result disaccharides were obtained of gluco and allo configurations in their reducing parts of molecules, in 20percent and 80percent yields, respectively.Particular compounds were isolated, their derivatives synthesized and their structures established on the basis of NMR analysis and hydrolysis.
