[OsIII(tpy)(Cl)(NCCH3)(NSAr)]: Reversible reduction of acetonitrile by OsIII-sulfilimido complexes

The reversible two-electron reduction of an acetonitrile ligand to the corresponding imine has been demonstrated for the first time with the title compound. Electrochemical reduction generates the OsIII-imino product [Eq. (a)], which can be isolated as the PF6- salt and used in further reactions for the reduction of organic carbonyl compounds. Ar = C6H5, 4-MeC6H4, 3,5-Me2C6H3.
