Kinetics and Mechanism of Acid-Catalyzed Decomposition of Dinitramide

In acid medium dinitramide quantitatively decomposes into nitric acid and nitrogen(I) oxide. The rate of this reaction was measured by spectrophotometry in aqueous H2SO4, HClO4, and HNO3 over a wide temperature range and at various compositions of the medium. On the basis of the dependence of the apparent rate constants on the composition of the medium and of the UV spectra of solutions of nitramide NH2NO2 in concentrated nitric acid and its mixtures with H2SO4 a mechanism was proposed for acid-catalyzed decomposition of dinitramide. The proposed mechanism includes denitration of dinitramide to nitramide and nitronium cation; the subsequent decomposition of nitramide yields nitrogen(I) oxide and water. Depending on the nitrating power of the medium, the rate-determining stage may be either denitration of dinitramide or decomposition of nitramide.

The kinetics of the decomposition of methyldinitroamine CH3N(NO2)2 in 46.1-78.2percent sulfuric acid were investigated. It was shown that the decomposition process is two-stage.In the first stage denitration of the methyldinitroamine occurs with the formation of methylnitroamine and nitric acid.Decomposition of methylnitroamine to nitrous oxide and methanol takes place in the second stage.
