The reaction of precocene II, 6,7-dimethoxy-2,2-dimethyl-2H-1-benzopyran (1) with silica gel bound ferric chloride affords the compounds (2-5), namely 1,2,10,11-tetramethoxy-5,5,7,7-tetramethyl-6,6a,6b,12b-tetrahydro-5H,7H-cyclopentabisbenzopyran (2), 6,7,6',7'-tetramethoxy-2,2,2',2'-tetramethyl-3',4'-dihydro-2H,2'Hbenzopyran> (3), 6,7,6',7'-tetramethoxy-2,2,2',2'-tetramethyl-2H,2'H--4'(3'H)-one (4) and 2,3,10,11-tetramethoxy-6,6,7,7-tetramethyl-6a,6b,12b,13a-tetrahydro-6H,7H-furo-bisbenzopyran (5).Theirstructures have been established by spectral data.The possible mode of their formation is also discussed.

The dimerization of precocene II with different Lewis acids has been studied.Besides C22H32O6 dimeric products, two further dimers, containing a tetrahydrofuran ring, were isolated and their structures established by spectroscopic and X-ray analysis.Since the furans were formed in the presence of SiO2-AgNO3 or SiO2-FeCl3 and not with SiO2-ZnBr2, it is possible that they arise by one-electron-transfer oxidation.
