It plays a crucial role in the digestion and absorption of dietary fats and fat-soluble vitamins in the small intestine. 3,7,12-trihydroxycholest-24-enoic acid is characterized by the presence of three hydroxyl groups at the 3rd, 7th, and 12th carbon positions, along with a double bond between the 24th and 25th carbon atoms. Chenodeoxycholic acid is used in the treatment of certain liver and gallbladder disorders, as well as in the dissolution of cholesterol gallstones. It is also found in some over-the-counter medications for the relief of gallbladder pain and in the treatment of primary biliary cirrhosis.
