Usage

General Description

Pentamethonium iodide is a synthetic organic compound and quaternary ammonium salt that is classified as a ganglionic blocking agent. It is used as a medication to treat high blood pressure by blocking the transmission of nerve impulses in the autonomic ganglia, leading to decreased peripheral vascular resistance and ultimately lowering blood pressure. Pentamethonium iodide acts by binding to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the autonomic ganglia, inhibiting the release of neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine. It is administered by injection and has a relatively rapid onset of action, making it useful in the acute management of hypertensive emergencies. However, due to its potential for severe side effects such as hypotension, bradycardia, and gastrointestinal disturbances, pentamethonium iodide is not commonly used and has been largely replaced in clinical practice by safer and more effective antihypertensive medications.
