2-Oxo-2H-1-benzopyran-3-carboxamide 1a reacts with ethyl 3-aminocrotonate to afford derivatives of benzopyranopyridine and benzopyranoazocine.Reaction with 3-aminocrotononitrile, and with 2-amino-1-propene-1,1,3-tricarbonitrile in ammonia solution, affords respectively a benzopyranopyridine and a benzopyranonaphthyridine derivative. The amide (1, R=H) and related hydrazide derivarives react with acetone and ammonium acetate to afford bridged compounds, derivatives of 11-oxo-8-oxa-10-azatricyclo2,7>trideca-2,4,6-triene-12-carboxamide
