Hydrazinolysis of 4-arylmethylene-2-oxazolin-5-ones (1) gives the corresponding acrylic acid hydrazides (5) among which the N-substituted hydrazides (5; R2=H) afford 5-aryl-methylene-3-phenyl-1,2,5,6-tetrahydro-1,2,4-triazin-6-ones (8) on heating with aq. sodium hydroxide and with excess of hydrazine hydrate, respectively.However, the N-phenylhydrazides (5; R2=Ph) give the corresponding 1-anilinio-4-arylmethylene-2-phenyl-2-imidazolin-5-ones (9) by simple heating.All steps can be carried out in the same flask.
