The reaction between [(η5-C7H9)RuCl(H)(PPh3) 2] and dihydrogen

[(η5-C7H9)RuCl(PPh3) 2] has been shown to react with hydrogen to give [(η3-C7H11)RuCl(PPh3) 2] initially, and then [RuCl(H)(PPh3)3], [Ru2H4Cl2(PPh3)4], and unidentified compound(s). This is a rare example of the hydrogenation of a coordinated ligand, where the ligand remains coordinated to the metal. It is suggested that the reverse reaction, involving the conversion of [(η3-C7H11)RuCl(PPh3) 2] to [(η5-C7H9)RuCl(PPh3) 2] is a rare example of the loss of dihydrogen from a coordinated ligand.
