(Chemical Equation Presented) An uncommon structure: The novel title compounds (see scheme) were prepared and fully characterized. The tetranuclear complex contains a hexagonal Pd4Si3 core involving one central Pd atom, three outer Pd atoms, and three bridging Si atoms within the same plane, whereas the dumbbell-shaped octanuclear Pd complex is composed of two Pd4Si3 groups bridged by a diphosphine ligand.
Dipalladium complex with bridging silylene ligands, {Pd(dmpe)} 2(μ-SiPh2)2L formed via dimerization of a bis(silyl)paliadium complex

Heating a toluene solution of the bis(silyl)palladium complex [Pd(SiHPh2)2(dmpe)] (1) (dmpe = 1,2-bis(dimethylphosphino) ethane) at 60°C afforded a dipalladium complex with bridging silylene ligands, [{Pd(dmpe)}2(μ-SiPh2)2] (2), accompanied by H2SiPh2 elimination. An X-ray crystallographic study of 2 suggested the presence of a Si...Si interaction in the four-membered Pd2Si2 ring.
