The complex ligand trans-4-styrylpyridine (trans-SP) is converted into its cis isomer (cis-SP) in the coordinated state upon simple alternating current electrolysis of the rhenium complex Re in acetonitrile/Bu4NCLO4 in an undivided electrochemical cell.Evidence is prresented that this reaction proceeds via an electronically excited state of the complex generated by cation-anion annihilation process.By the same method a CO vs.CH3CN ligand exchange is achieved with chromium hexacarbonyl.
