Synthesis of Iron π Complexes by Joint Electrolysis of Cyclopentadienes and Indenes on an Iron Anode

Mixed-ligand complexes CpFeIIR and Cp*FeIIR (R = η5-1-phenylindenyl, η5-1-methyl-3-phenylindenyl; Cp* = methylcyclopentadienyl) are prepared by joint electrolysis of CpH or Cp*H with 3-phenyl- or 1-methyl-3-phenylindenes in a cell with an iron anode (THF, Bu4NBF4 + Bu4NBr). The reaction concurrently produces the corresponding ferrocenes. With unsubstituted indene or 3-methylindene, the reaction yields biscyclopentadienyl and bisindenyliron complexes, rather than mixed-ligand ones.
