The first committed biosynthetic step toward clavulanic acid, the clinically important β-lactamase inhibitor, is catalyzed by the thiamin diphosphate (ThDP)-dependent enzyme N2-(2-carboxyethyl)arginine synthase (CEAS). This protein carries out
