Various derivatives of 3,4,5-substituted furan-2(5H)-ones have been readily prepared by using aluminum hydrogen sulfate [Al(HSO4)3] as an efficient catalyst in good yields and milder reaction conditions. The versatility of this protocol has been demonstrated with various substituted furan-2(5H)-ones.
Synthesis of 3,4,5-substituted furan-2(5H)-ones using Al-doped ZnO nanostructure

Al-doped ZnO nanostructures were prepared via a simple precipitation method and were characterized by several techniques including XRD, TEM, EDX, UV–Vis, and DLS. All XRD patterns show the hexagonal single-phase structure of pure and Al-doped ZnO nanopowders without impurity. The samples consist of particles with average sizes ranging from 53 to 60?nm measured by DLS technique. Next, the catalytic activity of pure and Al-doped ZnO nanopowders was investigated in terms of synthesis of 3,4,5-substituted furan-2(5H)-one derivatives using the three-component reaction of aldehydes, aromatic amines, and acetylenic esters. This procedure has advantages such as high yields, simple methodology, and easy work-up.

Use of green and biodegradable catalyst in organic synthesis is undeniable. Easy access, inexpensive, natural and green catalysts are valuable. In this study, a green procedure by using pectin as a green and natural catalyst for the one-pot synthesis of dihydro-2-oxopyrroles and 3,4,5-trisubstituted furan-2(5H)-ones at ambient temperature in aqueous media has been developed. This methodology has some advantages such as: use of a hetero polysaccharide as a easy access and biodegradable catalyst, clean work-up and no need to column chromatography.

Vitamin B12 was applied as catalyst for the one-pot three-component synthesis of 3,4,5-trisubstituted furan-2(5H)-ones from the condensation between aldehydes, amines and dialkylacetylendicarboxylates at ambient temperature in EtOH. In addition, N-aryl-3-aminodihydropyrrol-2-one-4-carboxylates were synthesised using mentioned catalyst at ambient temperature in EtOH from condensation between formaldehyde, amines, and dialkylacetylenedicarboxylates. This methodology has number of advantages such as: use of green and nonhazardous catalyst, clean work up, short reaction times, high yields and no need to column chromatography.

A simple, efficient, and environmentally benign protocol for the synthesis of 3,4,5-substituted furan-2(5H)-ones has been achieved using extract of watermelon as a natural catalyst. We found, for the first time, that the extract of watermelon could effectively catalyze The condensation reaction of aldehydes, amines, and dialkyl acetylenedicarboxylates to 3,4,5-substituted furan-2(5H)-ones in excellent yields under mild conditions. The low cost, easy availability of the catalyst, and simple reaction conditions suggest the possible use of the present method for large scale preparations.

Abstract We have developed an efficient method for the synthesis of 3,4,5-substituted furan-2(5H)-ones via one-pot, three-component condensation reaction of aldehydes, amines, and dialkyl acetylenedicarboxylates using acidic ionic liquid catalyst (N-methyl 2-pyrrolidonium hydrogen sulfate ([H-NMP]HSO4)). This reaction benefits from simple, inexpensive, and straightforward procedure, an environmental friendly method, and high yields.

1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate [bmim]HSO4: an acidic ionic liquid was used as a catalyst for the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds 3,4,5-substituted furan-2(5H)-ones from aniline derivatives, dialkyl acetylenedicarboxylates and aromatic aldehydes at 75 °C. Solventfree conditions, shorter reaction time, and good yields (71-94%) are some of advantages.

A facile one-pot synthesis of 3,4,5-substituted furan-2(5H)-one derivatives from a three-component reaction of aniline derivatives, dialkylacetylenedicarboxylates and aromatic aldehydes under mild conditions using tetra-n-butylammonium bisulfate as a catalyst has been developed.
