The structure of perchlororubian, originally obtained in 1856 by chlorination of an unidentified hydroxyanthraquinone glycoside in aqueous solution, and later by chlorination of xanthopurpurin, has been shown by X-ray crystallography to be 2',2',4',4',6',6'-hexachlorospiro--1,3',4,5'-tetraone.A mechanism for the reaction is suggested.
