The unique, half-sandwich perfluoroaryl-ytterbium(II) complex [Yb(C5Me5)(C6F5)(THF)3 ] (1) was synthesized in one step from Yb metal, HgPh(C6F5) and HC5Me5. A report on the successful synthesis and structure of the half-sandwich organoytterbium(II) complex by redox-transmetalation/ligand-exchange reaction is presented. Extrapolation to a wide range of novel organolanthanoid(II) complexes is envisaged.
