The reaction of benzophenothiazin-5-one with aromatic amines proceeds under mineral acid activation of the substrate to generate 6-arylamino derivatives exclusively.N-Alkylanilines give, in addition to the corresponding 6-N-alkyl-N-arylaminobenzophenothiazin-5-ones, the dealkylation product, namely 6-anilinobenzophenothiazin-5-one.

Photochemical reactions of 6-alkylamino and 6-alkylanilino-5H-benzophenothiazin-5-ones have been investigated. 6-Ethylamino and 6-isopropylamino-5H-benzophenothiazin-5-ones and 6-methylanilino- and 6-ethylanilino-5H-benzophenothiazin-5-ones gave 6-amino-5H-benzophenothiazin-5-one and 6-anilino-5H-benzophenothiazin-5-one, respectively, on irradiation.
