Five stable aromatic nitrile oxides gave addition of acetic acid, with or without sulphuric acid as catalyst. The corresponding acetic benzohydroximic anhydrides were the primary products, although in the absence of sulphuric acid final isolated products were the isomeric acetyl benzohydroxamates.Rates were linearly dependent on the catalyst concentration.Kinetic coefficients for the uncatalysed and for the catalysed reactions are correlated via the Hammett equation, using ?+ constants for para substituents, and negative ρ-values were found.
