Cationic mononuclear rhodium(I) or iridium(I) complexes of formula [M(L2)(N,O)]CF3SO3 [M=Rh or Ir; L2=diolefin, (CO)2 or (CO)(PPh3); N,O=1-(2′-pyridyl)-3-dimethylamino-2-propen-1-one] have been prepared; the N,O hybrid ligand co-ordinates to the metal as a bidentate chelate group through the ketonic oxygen and the pyridine nitrogen. The reactivity of these complexes towards oxidative addition reactions of halogens, methyl iodide or triflic acid to afford octahedral rhodium(III) or iridium(III) species has also been studied. Addition of the N,O ligand to CH2Cl2 solutions of [{MCl(diolefin)}2] leads to the ion-pair complexes [M(diolefin)(N,O)][MCl2(diolefin)] (M=Rh or Ir; diolefin=1,5-cyclooctadiene, COD, or tetrafluorobenzo-bicyclo(2,2,2)octatriene, TFB). The complexes have been characterised by analytical and spectroscopic data, their configuration has been confirmed by COSY and NOESY experiments and the structure of [Rh(COD)(N,O)][RhCl2(COD)] has been established by an X-ray diffraction study.
