5,5,6,11,12,12-Hexachloro-5,12-dihydrotetracene was obtained by the action of a mixture of phosphorus pentachloride and phosphorus oxychloride on 6,11-dihydroxy-5,12-tetracenequinone.It was dehalogenated to 5,6,11,12-tetrachlorotetracene.In solutions atmospheric oxygen oxidizes the latter to 6,11-dichloro-5,12-tetracenequinone.The intermediate photooxidation product is an endo-peroxide.
