The present invention provides optically active tetrahydrofurfuryl 2-(2S)-hydroxypropionate; and optically active lactate derivative represented by the formula [I] (wherein R1 represents C1 - C3 alkyl, benzyl, non--substituted phenyl, or mono-, di-, or tri-substituted phenyl substituted with methyl, isopropyl, methoxy, acetylamino, trifluoromethyl, nitro, cyano, fluorine, chlorine, bromine or iodine); optically active tetrahydrofurfuryl 2-chloropropionate; and an optically active hydroxyphenoxypropionate represented by the formula [III].
