The preparation of zirconium and hafnium complexes containing pyridyldiamine ligands, through Pd catalyzed coupling was discussed. Activation of dimethyl species in bromobenzene led to the formation of dimeric monocations, which are inactive for polymerization of 1-hexene. The results show that the introduction of ortho fluorides and chlorides decreases the rate of polymerization. The introduction also led to the formation of shorter polymer chains and β hydride elimination.
