3-methyl-4-methylaminoazobenzene, also known as 3-Methyl-4-dimethylaminoazobenzene or Butter Yellow, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C15H18N2. It is a synthetic azo dye that was once widely used as a food additive, particularly in butter and other dairy products, due to its bright yellow color. However, it has been found to be a potent carcinogen in animal studies, leading to its ban in many countries. The compound is characterized by its two benzene rings connected by an azo group (-N=N-), with a methyl group attached to one of the benzene rings and a dimethylamino group attached to the other. Due to its potential health risks, the use of 3-methyl-4-methylaminoazobenzene has been largely discontinued, and safer alternatives are now employed in food coloring.
