General Description

Pentacontane is a chemical compound belonging to the class of organic compounds known as acyclic alkanes. Its chemical formula is C50H102 and its structure consists of a continuous chain of 50 carbon atoms, together with 102 hydrogen atoms. This saturated hydrocarbon is largely unreactive due to its exclusively carbon-carbon and carbon-hydrogen single bonds, and its high molecular weight makes it one of the higher members of the alkane series. Pentacontane is generally found in fossil fuels as well as certain plant wax coatings and it solidifies at room temperature due to its high molecular weight.
