Diethyltin, also known as diethyltin dichloride or (C2H5)2SnCl2, is an organotin compound that consists of a tin atom bonded to two ethyl groups and two chlorine atoms. It is a colorless, oily liquid with a pungent odor and is used as a catalyst in various chemical reactions, particularly in the production of polyurethane foams and as a stabilizer for PVC. Diethyltin is also employed in the synthesis of other organotin compounds. However, due to its potential environmental and health risks, including toxicity to aquatic life and potential carcinogenic effects, its use is regulated in many countries.
