Cyanate is a chemical compound with the formula OCN^-. It is derived from the cyanic acid (HOCN), which is a linear molecule consisting of a carbon atom double-bonded to a nitrogen atom and single-bonded to an oxygen atom. Cyanate salts are formed when cyanate ions combine with various metal cations. These salts have applications in the production of polyurethane foams, as well as in the synthesis of certain pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. Cyanate esters, which are derived from cyanic acid, are also used as curing agents for epoxy resins and as components in the production of advanced composite materials.
