The phenylacetonitriles 3,4-R1R2C6H3CH2CN (R1, R2 = H, Me, Cl or F) and C6H5CH(c-C6H11)CN react with triflic acid under various conditions to give the corresponding N1-(1-benzylisoquinolin-3-yl)phenylacetamidinium triflate derivatives in moderate to high yields.This novel cyclotrimerization reaction can also be carried out with PhCH2CN using fluorosulphonic acid, and, in low yield, with HBF4/Et2O while ClSO3H, 4-MeC6H4SO3H and HCl/ZnCl2 give only phenylacetamide under similar conditions.Reaction of phenylacetonitrile with dry HCl resulted mainly in the formation of 1,3,5-tribenzyltriazine.Isoquinoline formation is not observed upon reaction or either 4-MeOC6H4CH2CN or 3,4-(MeO)2C6H3CH2CN with triflic acid, but complex product mixtures probably resulting from Houben-Hoesch reactions are obtained. 4-Acetoxyphenylacetonitrile gives a low yield of the Fries rearrangement product.
