3>Cyclophanetrienes from Wittig Reactions and Titanium-mediated Reductive Coupling

A series of new cyclophanetrienes, 4, 5, 6 and 7, has been prepared by a threefold Wittig reaction or by twofold Wittig reactions followed by titanium-mediated reductive couplings of dialdehydes.The combination of cis-selective Wittig reactions and intra-molecular reductive couplings is shown to be a simple and effective way to make large ring compounds containing different aromatic units.The ferrocenophane 7 in which the two five-membered rings are linked by a conjugated ?-system was found by (1)H NMR spectroscopy to exist in two mirror image forms with opposite helicity.
