Carbamyimidoyl-acetic acid is formed from the reaction of ammonia and carbon dioxide in the presence of the enzyme carbamoyl phosphate synthetase, and it is further converted into other compounds in the urea cycle, ultimately leading to the excretion of urea as a waste product.
