The activation of hexahydride-osmium complex by the C-hα bond of aldehydes was studied. The intermediate complex promoted carbon hydrogen activation-decarbonylation and carbon hydrogen activation-hydroxylation. The coordination geometry around the osmium atom was described as a distorted pentagonal bipyramid with the phosphorus atoms of the phosphines occupying axial positions. The reactions of transition metal polyhydrides with aldehydes shows that the hexahydride and related compounds are active catalyst precursors for the Tishchenko reaction.
