, p. 1641 - 1654 (2007/10/03)
The reaction mechanism of chemical conversion of (E)-β-[2-hydroxylphenylethylene]benzeneethanol into 2-phenylbenzofuran by DDQ, which involves loss of one carbon unit, was characterized and described. Five naturally occurring 2-phenylbenzofurans of not only the isoflavonoid but also stilbenoid origin were synthesized by use of this chemical scheme, which proved that this new scheme is a useful tool for quick synthesis of 2-phenylbenzofurans.
Synthesis of 5-Deoxykievitone Dimethyl Ether and Related Isopentenylated Isoflavanones

, p. 481 - 484 (2007/10/02)
Three different 7-hydroxyisoflavanones (1a, 1b and 1c) have been converted into the corresponding 6'',6''-dimethylpyranoisoflavanones (4a, 4b and 4c) either through their 8-(3,3-dimethylallyl) derivatives (2a, 2b and 2c) or their 1,1-dimethylpropargyl ethers (3a, 3b and 3c).Among them, 2c is the dimethyl ether of naturally occurring 5-deoxykievitone.Attempts to synthesize the natural product itself by this route have been unsuccessful because demethylation of the starting desoxybenzoin (5) gives the corresponding 2-arylbenzofuran derivative (7a).
