2-Methylbutane-1,3-diol, also known as pinacol, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C5H12O2. It is a colorless, viscous liquid that is soluble in water and has a sweet taste. This diol is a derivative of 2-methylbutane, where two hydroxyl groups (-OH) are attached to the first and third carbon atoms. Pinacol is an important intermediate in the synthesis of various organic compounds, particularly in the production of acetic acid and its derivatives. It is also used as a solvent, a stabilizer for rubber, and a component in the manufacturing of perfumes and pharmaceuticals. The compound is synthesized through the reaction of acetone with hydrobromic acid, followed by hydrolysis, or by the reduction of 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol with a metal hydride. Pinacol is sensitive to heat and light, and it can decompose to form acetone and other byproducts.
