The reaction of 8,16-dimethylMCP 1 with large excess of iodine monochloride in a carbon tetrachloride at room temperature afforded 1-exo,5,13-trichloro-8,16-dimethylMCP 2 in 67percent yield.Acetolysis of 2 afforded the corresponding 1-exo-acetoxy derivative 3 with retension of configuration, which is converted to 5,13-dichloro-8,16-dimethylMCP-1-one 5 via 1-exo-hydroxy derivative 4A.The chemical properties of ketone 5 are also discussed.
