The primary pyrolysis reaction of sulfides, sulfoxides, and sulfones (1-3), in the gas phase at 500 - 900 deg C, is homolytic cleavage of the C-SOn bond. The order of reactivity, sulfoxide >> sulfone > sulfide, is consistent with the relative stabilities of the radicals produced. At 900 deg C a novel and synthetically useful rearrangement of dibenzothiophene 5-oxide (3b) to 1-hydroxydibenzothiophene (5) was observed.
