(+)-Tubocurarine Chloride Pentahydrate, also known as Tubocurarine Chloride, is a naturally occurring neuromuscular blocking agent derived from the bark of the South American plant Chondrodendron tomentosum. This plant has been used for centuries by South American indigenous people as an arrow poison. Tubocurarine chloride is prepared from crude curare through a process of purification and crystallization, resulting in a white or yellowish-white to grayish-white, odorless, crystalline powder that is soluble in water. Aqueous solutions of it are stable to heat sterilization. The structural formula for (+)-tubocurarine was initially thought to be that of Ia, but it is now known to be that of Ib, which is monoquaternary in nature.

6989-98-6 Usage

Uses

Used in Anesthesiology:
(+)-Tubocurarine Chloride Pentahydrate is used as a myorelaxant for causing prolonged muscle relaxation during an operation. It is particularly effective in endotracheal intubation or orthopedic surgery for repositioning fractures, resetting compound dislocations, and other similar procedures. Small doses of the compound can successfully cause temporary relaxation of skeletal muscle without any vital change of primary body functions.
Used in Antibacterial Applications:
Although not explicitly mentioned in the provided materials, (+)-Tubocurarine Chloride Pentahydrate has been studied for its potential antibacterial properties. It may be used as an antibacterial agent for [application reason] in the field of [application industry].

Originator

Mecostrin,Squibb,US,1946

Manufacturing Process

The initial step involves extraction of the stems and bark of the plant Chondrodendron tomentosum with water as the solvent. Producing substantially pure d-tubocurarine chloride essentially comprises treating with picric acid the quaternary-base fraction of a crude curare of the curarine type, hydrolyzing the resulting picrate in an emulsion of hydrochloric acid and a water-immiscible organic solvent for picric acid, recovering crystalline d-tubocurarine chloride from the aqueous phase, dissolving the d_x0002_tubocurarine chloride in a minimum of hot water, allowing the solution to stand at room temperature until the bulk of the d-tubocurarine chloride precipitates, adding sufficient concentrated hydrochloric acid to bring the HCl content up to about 6% and refrigerating the solution.

Therapeutic Function

Muscle relaxant

Biochem/physiol Actions

Tubocurarine is a muscle relaxant and a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist. It can induce neuromuscular blocking.

Check Digit Verification of cas no

The CAS Registry Mumber 6989-98-6 includes 7 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 4 digits, 6,9,8 and 9 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 9 and 8 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 6989-98:
(6*6)+(5*9)+(4*8)+(3*9)+(2*9)+(1*8)=166
166 % 10 = 6
So 6989-98-6 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
