Diisopropylphosphinic acid p-nitrophenyl ester, also known as DFP, is an organophosphorus compound with the chemical formula C9H16NO5P. It is a colorless, oily liquid that is soluble in organic solvents. DFP is a potent irreversible inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme responsible for breaking down the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the nervous system. This inhibition leads to the accumulation of acetylcholine, causing overstimulation of the nervous system and potentially leading to severe health effects or death. Due to its high toxicity, DFP has been used as a chemical warfare agent and is classified as a Schedule 1 substance under the Chemical Weapons Convention. It is also used as a pesticide and in the synthesis of other organophosphorus compounds.
